More than 280 students gathered at Wellington College last week to hear from former All Black and current Director of Rugby Neemia Tialata, as the school builds momentum toward a historic rugby season.

Tialata spoke at a lunchtime rugby cluster event, sharing insights into the college’s proud rugby tradition and the values that continue to shape its players.

He highlighted the importance of commitment, teamwork and strong connections across the rugby community, telling students that success on the field is built on the support of whānau, coaches and the wider school network.

Tialata also outlined plans and opportunities for the 2026 season, encouraging students of all skill levels to get involved in the programme.

The upcoming season will mark 150 years since the first intercollegiate rugby match in New Zealand, played between Wellington College and Nelson College in 1876.

To celebrate the milestone, the school has planned a series of events, including a golf day, a legends luncheon and a commemorative 1st XV match between the two historic rivals on April 18.

Staff say the anniversary is a chance not only to honour the past but also to strengthen the future of rugby at the college.

Students who are still interested in playing this season are encouraged to register, with organisers emphasising that there is a place for everyone in the programme.
