Brooklyn Twilight Festival brings schools, music and neighbours together

Local school performers will help open Brooklyn Twilight Festival on Saturday 14 November, before an afternoon of family activities gives way to an evening of live music.

Harrison Street and the Brooklyn Community Centre grounds will host the event from 1pm to 8pm, with more than 50 stalls spanning food, crafts and community groups.

Ridgway and Brooklyn schools will perform kapa haka at 1.10pm. For Ridgway, the opening appearance continues an annual tradition. The school has invited families to put their children forward to take part, encouraging as many performers as possible to represent their school at the neighbourhood celebration.

The Wellington Carnival Street Band follows with an interactive family concert. Fun & Funner!, featuring Karen O’Leary, Tom Watson and Eilish Wilson, will also perform for younger audiences.

Later acts include Fables, Tegan Nott, Juna and Tahini Bikini, with Vera Ellen closing the programme from 7.20pm.

Residents can take the stage themselves, with a separate community stage open to all ages and experience levels from 1pm to 6pm.

Free bouncy castles will operate during those hours, alongside face painting and stalls introducing local community groups. Food stalls and the evening music programme give families the option to stay for dinner.

People interested in performing on the community stage can email [email protected]. The full programme is available at brooklynfestival.co.nz.
