Wellington is preparing for a busy Matariki long weekend, with a sold-out All Blacks test and major waterfront events expected to draw thousands of people into the central city.

The All Blacks will face Italy at Hnry Stadium on Saturday, July 11, as part of the inaugural Nations Championship.

The 32,450-seat test is sold out. Stadium gates open at 3pm ahead of the family-friendly 5.10pm kick-off, while all parking at the venue has also sold out.

Fans can meet selected All Blacks at Rebel Sport on the corner of Cuba and Manners streets from 10.30am to 11.30am on Saturday.

From 2pm, waterfront lighting will support fans walking towards the stadium. The Cable Car tunnels will also be lit with the New Zealand flag in one tunnel and the Italian flag in the other.

Extra public transport

Extra trains will run on the Hutt Valley, Kāpiti and Johnsonville lines before and after the match.

People with match tickets or stadium membership passes can travel on Metlink buses and trains at no extra cost throughout Saturday. Tickets must be shown to the driver or onboard staff.

The offer does not include harbour ferries, Airport Express buses or Te Hunga Whaikaha Total Mobility taxis.

An additional harbour ferry sailing will leave Queens Wharf at about 7.30pm after the match, but bookings are required. Metlink is advising passengers to travel early and expect busy services.

Matariki on the waterfront

Matariki Ahi Kā is also scheduled along the Wellington waterfront from 6pm to 9pm during the long weekend.

The free, whānau-friendly celebration features fire installations, projections, live performances and kai.

Thursday night’s programme was cancelled because of bad weather. People planning to attend the remaining sessions should check Wellington City Council’s event updates before travelling.

Other school holiday attractions include the pop-up ice rink at Queens Wharf and LEGO Star Wars: The Exhibition at Tākina Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Drivers are encouraged to consider other routes or forms of transport because of the large crowds. Pedestrians, cyclists and e-scooter riders should also take extra care around the waterfront and stadium area.

Australasia’s only festival dedicated to fulldome cinema is coming to Wellington this week, with audiences set to experience immersive storytelling under the dome at Space Place.

The Dome Under Film Festival, known as DUFF, will run from May 14 to 16 at Te Ara Whānui ki te Rangi Space Place.

The Wellington screenings mark the festival’s Aotearoa New Zealand debut. Space Place will present “Best of the Fest” sessions featuring eight films from Museums Victoria’s 2026 festival line-up, including award-winning and highly commended entries.

Fulldome films are created specifically for planetarium screens, surrounding viewers with 360-degree visuals and sound.

Organisers say the programme showcases some of the best immersive cinema from across Australasia and beyond.

Tickets are $26 for adults and $18 for children per session. Entry also includes access to Space Place galleries and telescope viewings on clear nights.

Space Place thanked Museums Victoria for helping bring the festival to Wellington.

Nearly 2,000 Wellingtonians are spending their Monday nights at the movies, as the Wellington Film Society continues to grow its audience at The Embassy Theatre. [...]

Nearly 2,000 Wellingtonians are spending their Monday nights at the movies, as the Wellington Film Society continues to grow its audience at The Embassy Theatre.

The volunteer-run society, now in its 80th year, has seen membership rise sharply in recent years, climbing from around 700 before COVID-19 to just under 2,000 in 2025.

Screenings take place most Monday evenings at the Embassy’s Grand Theatre, where up to 750 seats regularly fill with a mix of office workers, students and retirees.

Vice president Johnny Crawford said the appeal of watching films on the big screen has remained strong despite changes in how people consume media.

“People crave this experience. Even when venues close and conditions are unfavourable, that feeling of wanting to have these experiences does not go away,” he said.

The 2026 programme includes more than 30 films from around the world, running from February through to December.

President Harry Evans said younger audiences had increasingly been drawn to the screenings.

“I think one of the reasons for that appeal to younger audiences is the fact that it provides an opportunity to focus on something,” he said.

“We all need that social pressure to completely focus on a film and to not go on our phones.”

One of the highlights of this year’s programme is the return of the society’s live cinema event in July, where a silent film is accompanied by a newly commissioned score performed by local musicians.

This year’s feature is The Wind, directed by Victor Sjöström, with music by Wellington-based artists Hara and Thomas Arbor.

The second screening of the event will be open to the public, not just members.

The society is also planning its first mini film festival weekend in June, with a curated programme of films scheduled across several days.

Evans said the atmosphere created by audiences remains a key part of the experience.

“You’ll see groups of friends, people on their own, and families coming together,” he said.

“All of those different ways that we’re together form part of creating the atmosphere.”

Wellington holds UNESCO City of Film status, and Crawford said the society plays a role in maintaining that identity.

“We are a UNESCO City of Film, and I think it’s awesome for us to find ways to celebrate that status,” he said.

For many, that connection is felt each week inside the Embassy, where audiences continue to turn out for a shared cinema experience.

Fans heading to the highly anticipated clash between Wellington Phoenix and Wrexham AFC this Saturday will have extra public transport options, thanks to boosted Metlink services.

The match kicks off at 5pm on 19 July at Sky Stadium in Wellington, and Metlink is rolling out additional capacity on key train and bus routes to ease congestion and reduce pressure on the wider transport system.

Trains will run with increased capacity before the game, and extra services will be added to the Hutt Valley, Porirua-Kāpiti, and Johnsonville lines after the final whistle. Larger buses will also be in service on core routes to accommodate the expected crowds.

Metlink is urging fans to plan ahead, travel early, and use Snapper cards to tag on and off for quicker boarding and access to discounted fares. The East-by-West ferry will operate on its usual schedule, accepting only cashless payments.

For up-to-date travel information, passengers can check the Metlink app, visit the website, or call 0800 801 700.

Porirua will be sizzling with flavour this August as local eateries and venues dive into the love-themed festivities of Visa Wellington On a Plate 2025. The region is celebrating culinary creativity with an enticing lineup of events and burgers, all under this year’s heartfelt theme, “Food is Love.”

From Friday 1 August, Porirua locals can indulge in a packed programme, headlined by “Kai Tahi – Burgers Across the World” on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 August. The two-day event offers a one-stop-shop experience to sample every Burger Wellington creation from the Porirua region – a true paradise for burger lovers.

Other standout events include:

Gear Homestead’s “Homage to Heritage” on Friday 8 August, a four-course degustation dinner honouring New Zealand’s culinary past.

Tuk Tuk Thai Kitchen’s “I-Sarn Thai Kantok” on Wednesdays 6 and 20 August, where chef Daeng invites guests to share in a traditional Thai communal feast.

Marines Hall Open Air Theatre’s “Love I’Th’Age O’Th’Bard” on Saturday 2 August, blending Shakespearean drama with hearty fare like giant turkey legs and mugs of ale.

Burger Wellington highlights from Porirua include bold entries such as:

“Burn Baby Burn” from Whitby Co-Op Kitchen & Bar

“Hi Hangi I’m Home” by Sandbar Mana

“Gran’s Table” from Sushil’s Musclechef Kitchen and Cafe

“Pho Real” from Pho Sho Porirua

“Lu’au With Love” by Pepe’s Cafe

“The Good Boy” from 4Paws Empire – a special burger just for dogs!

Festival Director Beth Brash says this year’s programme is designed to reignite the joy of connecting over food. “We want August to feel like one big love letter to the city and the incredible people who call it home,” she said.

With over 200 burgers and 100 events planned across the region, the festival is expected to draw big crowds and generate strong economic returns. Last year, it brought in more than $9 million for Wellington’s hospitality sector.

Visa NZ’s Anthony Watson reaffirmed the festival’s importance, stating, “It’s more than just a celebration of food – it’s a powerful engine for economic growth and community pride.”

Tickets for events go on general sale from Thursday 27 June at visawoap.com. Locals are encouraged to support their favourite venues and discover new ones while celebrating what Porirua does best – bringing people together over great kai.

At The Coffee Cart Elsdon, coffee isn’t just a drink—it’s an experience. Owner Kaya Peace has partnered with Mojo Wellington to create their signature blend, The Injection, a carefully crafted mix of organic, fair-trade single-origin beans from Peru, Papua New Guinea, and Mexico. The result? A velvety body, delicate acidity, and aromatic spice, with rich notes of dark chocolate, cloves, nutmeg, and a smooth cocoa finish. With 20 years of experience, Kaya knows that consistency is key, ensuring every cup is made to perfection.

From Coffee Cart to Community Staple

Fifteen years ago, The Coffee Cart Elsdon began as a small coffee cart on Prosser Street, serving up great coffee to locals. Six years ago, Kaya took over, bringing a fresh passion for coffee and connection. Then, four years ago, the cart evolved into its iconic black shipping container, allowing for an expanded menu while staying true to its roots—quality coffee and a welcoming atmosphere.

Fan Favourites: Coffee & Legendary Breakfasts

Coffee is the star of the show—whether it’s a flat white, long black, macchiato, or mocha, customers keep coming back for the consistency and quality. But it’s not just about the coffee. Their bacon and egg English muffin with a hash brown and BBQ sauce is a best-seller, with hundreds flying out the door each week. Other customer favourites include cheese scones, almond slices, and their newest addition, southern cheese rolls, which are quickly becoming a must-try.

Seasonal Drinks & Special Offerings

Originally a Valentine’s Day special, the strawberry matcha was such a hit that it’s now a permanent menu item. They also offer milkshakes and smoothies, perfect for a refreshing treat.

More Than Coffee—A Community Hub

For Kaya, it’s about more than just making coffee—it’s about creating a space where people feel at home. “There’s an undeniable energy here,” she says. Whether it’s a quick stop for a caffeine fix or a chat with familiar faces, The Coffee Cart Elsdon is a place where customers feel seen, heard, and part of something special.
