Explore Porirua’s Green Spaces for Parks Week

Spending time in nature has proven benefits for mental and physical well-being, and Porirua residents have access to more than 180 parks and reserves to enjoy these advantages.

Research shows that outdoor activities such as walking, running, or cycling can improve overall health, while even passive time in green spaces can reduce stress and enhance mood.

“Regular park visits can contribute to lowering blood pressure due to the calming effects of nature,” says Porirua City Manager Parks, Julian Emeny. “Spending time in natural light can help boost Vitamin D levels, improve sleep, and ease symptoms of stress and anxiety.”

Parks Week 2025 runs from 3 to 10 March, encouraging residents to explore local parks and experience their benefits. Bothamley Park has reopened and is available for exercise or quiet relaxation.

Community events are also planned, including free play activities in Cannons Creek, Whitby, and Plimmerton. With the 2025 planting season beginning in May, residents are encouraged to participate in volunteer planting initiatives.

Many of Porirua’s parks, playgrounds, and reserves are within walking distance for residents, with several offering accessible options for people with limited mobility.

“More information on local parks, events, and Parks Week activities is available at Porirua City Council’s website.”
