Police Launch Wellington Homicide Investigation

Police are investigating after Simon Bird died outside a Northland (Wellington) home.

Police have launched a homicide investigation following the death of Simon Bird, whose body was discovered outside a Northland property in Wellington on Tuesday morning.

The 65-year-old was found at his home on Albemarle Road around 11am, after a concerned friend conducted a welfare check when Bird had not been heard from for several days.

The discovery has sent shockwaves through both the local community and the national racing fraternity.

At a press briefing on today, Detective Inspector Nick Pritchard confirmed Bird’s death is being treated as a homicide following a post-mortem examination. Police believe he was last seen alive on Thursday 27 March and are now working to piece together his final movements.

Bird, who served as vice-president of the Wairarapa Racing Club in Featherston, is being remembered as a passionate and generous contributor to the sport.

“He was just a tireless worker for the Tauherenikau Racing Club,” said Matthew Sherry, general manager of Tauherenikau Racing & Event Centre. “He was one of those guys with a smile on his face all the time. To lose a person like that is tragic.”

His niece, Christina Bird, shared her grief in a heartfelt Facebook tribute, describing her uncle as “fiercely loyal, kind, and funny,” and someone who will be “missed beyond what words can explain.”

Police have recovered a silver Honda Odyssey from the Albemarle Road address, which will undergo forensic examination. Officers are also reviewing CCTV and dashcam footage and are conducting door-to-door inquiries in the Northland neighbourhood.

“We’re appealing to anyone who knew Mr Bird, saw him or his vehicle, or noticed suspicious activity around his home in the past week,” Pritchard said. “What may seem insignificant could be the missing piece we need.”

Police will maintain a presence in the area over the coming days.
