Traffic backs up on State Highway 1 at Ngauranga Gorge after a morning crash caused delays of up to an hour for Wellington commuters.

Motorists faced significant delays into Wellington this morning after a crash on a key route caused congestion during peak travel time.

The incident occurred just before 7am on State Highway 1 at the Ngauranga Gorge, south of Newlands, where a southbound lane was closed following the crash.

New Zealand Transport Agency said delays reached up to an hour at the height of the disruption as traffic backed up along the arterial route into the city.

The vehicle involved has since been removed and the lane reopened, but congestion continued to affect travel times later in the morning.

Drivers were still experiencing delays of around 30 minutes as traffic gradually cleared.

NZTA is advising motorists to allow extra time for their journeys while conditions return to normal.
