Wellington Phoenix defender Mackenzie Barry will return for a sixth season, with the club confirming the re-signing of its most capped women’s player for the 2026–27 A-League Women campaign.
The 23-year-old centre back has been a mainstay since the team’s inaugural season, starting 91 of the club’s 97 matches, including every game in their record-setting 2025–26 regular season.
Wellington Phoenix coach Bev Priestman said Barry’s influence extends well beyond her on-field performances, describing her as central to the team’s identity and standards.
“She’s the ultimate professional, and a world class defender and human,” Priestman said. “What you’ve seen on the pitch this season from a team effort perspective is driven a lot by Mack at the back.”
Barry also stepped into a leadership role during the season, captaining the side in the absence of regular skipper CJ Bott, who is expecting her first child in July.
The defender said staying in Wellington was an easy decision after what she described as the most enjoyable season of her career.
“This has been by far the most enjoyable and successful season of my career, so why would I want to leave?” Barry said. “The Phoenix is like home to me. It’s my first professional club.”
Barry said the club’s environment and recent squad stability were key factors, pointing to early re-signings and long-term deals among teammates.
She also has her sights set on international selection, aiming to secure a place with the Football Ferns for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
“It’s a huge goal of mine,” she said. “I feel like I’ve improved under Bev, and everything here can set me up to be in the best position for World Cup selection.”
Barry becomes the fourth Phoenix women’s player to re-sign in recent weeks, with 11 squad members already confirmed for next season as the club builds continuity following a breakthrough campaign.
