Massey Road between Shelly Bay and Scorching Bay will close from early June until October 2026 while crews repair three sections of seawall supporting the road at the northern end of Te Motu Kairangi Miramar Peninsula.

The work covers about 220 metres of seawall at Mahanga Bay and two sites in Kau Bay, about 200 metres south of the Point Halswell lighthouse.

The project will involve demolishing and removing the existing walls, earthworks, building a new concrete mass block wall, reinstating the road, installing a new safety barrier, improving drainage and restoring habitats.

Work is scheduled from 6am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday, with Sunday work as required.

The road closure will run from Point Halswell to Herbies Beach, the pullover area north of Scorching Bay.

Cyclists and pedestrians will still be able to use the road in both directions during construction, with traffic control in place.

Closing the road allows work at both repair areas to be completed in one five-month period. The approach is expected to bring the completion date forward to October 2026 and reduce traffic management costs by about 50%.

Motorists travelling to the eastern bays will be redirected through Miramar and over to Karaka Bay via Awa Road. Drivers can also access the area through the Seatoun tunnel or from Breaker Bay.

Road users are advised to allow extra travel time and follow posted detours and traffic management instructions.
