Terrace, Mt Victoria and Arras tunnels to close on consecutive Wellington nights

Three central-city tunnels will close on successive nights, while Wellington Road at Kilbirnie will shut southbound on Tuesday and Wednesday nights for resurfacing.

The restrictions form part of Wellington’s state-highway work programme for 8–14 August and are weather dependent.

Three tunnel closures

The Terrace Tunnel will close fully from 9pm Monday 10 August until 4.30am Tuesday for general maintenance.

The Mt Victoria Tunnel will close fully from 9pm Tuesday 11 August until 4.30am Wednesday, also for general maintenance.

The Arras Tunnel will close fully from 9pm Wednesday 12 August until 4.30am Thursday for general maintenance.

The notice does not provide detour routes or expected delay times for the tunnel closures.

Two-night Kilbirnie closure

The southbound section of SH1 Wellington Road between Kilbirnie Crescent and Evans Bay Parade will close from 10pm to 4.30am on Tuesday 11 and Wednesday 12 August for resurfacing patches.

On Tuesday night, crews will work opposite Kilbirnie Park and Evans Bay Parade will remain open.

On Wednesday night, crews will work at the Wellington Road–Evans Bay Parade intersection near the Wind Needle sculpture.

Drivers must follow signposted detours. An embedded map supplied with the notice shows a Wellington Road detour using Kilbirnie Crescent and Evans Bay Parade, and a Cobham Drive detour using Kilbirnie Crescent, Rongotai Road and Cobham Drive.

Tawa and the northern motorway

A northbound altered lane layout will operate between the Westchester Drive–Grenada Drive northbound on-ramp and Tawa interchange from 7pm Sunday 9 August until 5.30am Monday for resurfacing patches.

The Tawa northbound off-ramp will have a northbound lane closure from 7pm to 5.30am on Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 August while streetlight poles are replaced.

The notice also describes a northbound road closure on Transmission Gully between Linden and the Kenepuru Link Road northbound on-ramp from 9pm to 4am on Sunday 9 and Monday 10 August for resurfacing.

Ngauranga approaches

The Ngauranga southbound off-ramp will close from 9pm to 4.30am on Sunday 9, Monday 10 and Thursday 13 August for the Jarden Mile project.

The Ngauranga northbound on-ramp will close from 8pm to 5.30am each night from Sunday 9 to Thursday 13 August. There will be no northbound access to the on-ramp from the Hutt Road–Jarden Mile intersection.

Southbound lane closures will also affect Petone to Ngauranga from 7pm to 5.30am on Monday 10 and Tuesday 11 August, and the section opposite Horokiwi Road from 8pm Thursday 13 August until 5.30am Friday.

A northbound altered lane layout between Ngauranga and Horokiwi Road will operate from 8pm Wednesday 12 August until 5.30am Thursday.

No parking restrictions, public transport changes or quantified delays are stated. Motorists should plan around the full closures, follow signposted detours and check NZTA Journey Planner shortly before travelling.
