Wellington residents have until the end of today to have their say on plans to restart the long-delayed Arlington housing development in Mount Cook.
Kāinga Ora is proposing 104 new social homes on part of the council-owned Arlington site after its original plan for 301 homes became unaffordable.
The previous project had been approved at an estimated cost of $296 million, but was paused in 2023 after updated estimates found another $123 million would be required.
The revised development would include 55 one-bedroom apartments, 37 two-bedroom apartments and 12 four-bedroom terrace homes, along with a community room for residents.
Kāinga Ora says foundations and other work already completed for the original development would be reused where possible.
The new proposal requires Wellington City Council to vary its existing lease agreement with Kāinga Ora.
If the variation is approved, the Government has also proposed providing up to $6 million to the council for housing-related services supporting vulnerable people.
The revised development would use only part of the Arlington site, leaving further land available for future decisions by the council.
Public consultation closes today, August 31.
Feedback will be reported back to councillors before they decide whether to approve the lease variation, with that decision expected in late September.
Subject to the remaining approvals, Kāinga Ora expects construction to begin in late 2027 and finish in late 2029.
