Roadworks planned across central Wellington this week

Motorists can expect a series of lane closures and traffic controls across central Wellington this week as NZTA carries out maintenance and infrastructure work.

The Wellington Transport Alliance has outlined work in Thorndon, Te Aro and around the Basin Reserve between 20 and 25 September.

At the Tinakori Road intersection in Thorndon, stop/go traffic controls will be in place from 7pm on Sunday 20 September until 5.30am Monday while traffic light work is carried out.

In Te Aro, Vivian Street between Willis Street and Tory Street will have stop/go controls from 9pm Monday until 4am Tuesday for streetlight repairs.

A southbound lane on Vivian Street between Taranaki Street and Kent Terrace will also be closed from 7pm to 5am on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights for further streetlight work.

On Kent Terrace, between Pirie Street and the Basin Reserve, a southbound lane will be closed from 9am to 3pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for pump station upgrade work.

Lane closures are also planned around Rugby Street and Sussex Street at the Basin Reserve from 7pm to 5am on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights while geotechnical surveying is carried out.

NZTA is also warning motorists about a larger programme of work coming in October.

Major maintenance on the southbound lanes of Wellington’s Urban Motorway is planned from Sunday 4 October to Thursday 15 October, alongside planned tunnel closures.

The work will include resurfacing, bridge-joint and pavement repairs, drainage work, sign and streetlight replacements, line marking and safety inspections.

NZTA says the roadworks are weather dependent and may be postponed at short notice. Motorists are advised to check the NZTA Journey Planner before travelling.
