Wellington cricket fans will be able to meet the BLACKCAPS at Frank Kitts Park on Friday 6 November, as the capital marks a century of sporting links between New Zealand and India.
The players are scheduled to appear from 4pm to 5pm, within a waterfront Fan Zone running from 3.30pm to 6.30pm. The gathering comes ahead of the teams’ one-day international at Hnry Stadium on Saturday 7 November.
The centenary reaches back to 1926, when an Indian Army hockey team first toured New Zealand. Sport New Zealand’s anniversary programme links that history with present-day community and cultural events in Wellington and four other host cities.
On the waterfront, a free historic walk uses 10 illuminated light boxes to tell stories of Wellington’s connections with India. It forms part of a wider programme bringing sport together with food and cultural activities.
Saturday’s Frank Kitts Park programme begins with AWHI Yoga from 7.45am to 8.45am. Cultural performances and a mini market follow at the Fan Hub from 9am to 2pm, with a fan walk to the stadium gathering at 1.30pm.
The local hub is a joint effort involving WellingtonNZ, Sport New Zealand, Wellington City Council, Cricket Wellington and New Zealand Cricket. Further waterfront celebrations are scheduled for 14 and 15 November.
The Wellington programme has details of the activities and a separate ticket link for the stadium match.
