Emergency services responded to a train derailment at Khandallah Station in Wellington on Saturday evening, with reports that six passengers were injured.

Police said they were called to the scene about 7.20pm and are working alongside other emergency services to manage the incident.

The derailment occurred at Khandallah Station, where emergency crews remain in attendance.

It has been reported that about six passengers sustained injuries. The extent of those injuries has not yet been confirmed.

Police have established cordons at Box Hill and Station Road while emergency services respond and assess the scene.

Motorists and pedestrians are being asked to avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible.
