Wellington City Council has acknowledged the death of Takapū/Northern Ward councillor Tony Randle.
Cr Randle was first elected to the council in 2022 and was re-elected in 2025. He was known for his strong interest in transport and detailed approach to public policy.
Mayor Andrew Little said Cr Randle was deeply committed to public service and wanted the best for Wellington and its communities.
“Tony was deeply committed to public service and wanted the best for Wellington and its communities. He was always cordial and constructive, but he also brought a healthy scepticism to every issue.”
Little said Cr Randle regularly challenged assumptions and examined evidence before reaching decisions.
“What really set him apart was his focus on substance over rhetoric. He wanted to understand the facts, examine the evidence, and make the best possible decision based on all available information.”
Council chief executive Matt Prosser said Cr Randle brought care and attention to detail to his work and was a strong advocate for his local community.
“His love of a spreadsheet and its detailed analysis will be missed around the council and council table,” Prosser said.
During the 2025–2028 triennium, Cr Randle was deputy chair of the CCO Review and Appointments Subcommittee and Te Takere | Regulatory Processes Committee.
He was also a member of Te Kura o te Waka | Audit and Risk Committee and was appointed to the Wellington Regional Transport Committee.
Before joining the council, Cr Randle was president of the Johnsonville Community Association from 2020 to 2022.
The Mayor, councillors, chief executive and council staff have extended their condolences to Cr Randle’s family, friends, colleagues and the Takapū/Northern Ward communities he represented.
The council said further information about arrangements to acknowledge Cr Randle’s service would be provided in due course.
